compression, compaction

Jones: Automatic summarising: The state of the art

(I distinguish statistical compression, as discussed here, from compaction, where, e.g. unimportant words,
or syntactic substructures, are deleted from extracted sentences. Compaction is a valuable element in extractive summarising since it typically improves both content focus and expressive coherence, and it figures in more systems than those mentioned as doing pruning.)
